Discovering the Hidden Life in Water

Yesterday, with the support of YLACES, Stewards of Eden brought environmental science to life for children at Ahazaza Independent School.

The learners collected water samples from their local environment and carefully observed them using microscopes, magnifying glasses, droppers, nets and other simple scientific tools. They were excited to discover tiny creatures and living organisms hidden in water, things that cannot be seen with our eyes alone.

Using GLOBE-inspired learning methods, the children practised how to observe, collect, compare and discuss environmental information. They also recorded and shared what they discovered through drawings, photographs, videos and classroom presentations. Key instructions were explained in Kinyarwanda so that even the youngest learners could understand, participate confidently and enjoy the experience.

This activity is part of a wider project that will benefit 200 learners aged 5–12 in Grades 1–6. It is helping to close the gap between theoretical and practical science education by giving children access to tools that are often unavailable in rural schools.

Through these hands-on experiences, learners are developing curiosity, teamwork, observation and data-collection skills. Most importantly, they are beginning their journey as informed and responsible Science Citizens who understand their local environment and are prepared to protect it.

We are deeply grateful to YLACES for strengthening our environmental science equipment hub and for continuing to support practical climate and environmental education. This partnership is helping disadvantaged children discover that science is not only something written on a blackboard. It is something they can observe, investigate, understand and use to care for the Earth.
